Monkeys of Swayambhunath: Addressing Health Challenges with Care and Awareness
Swayambhunath, a UNESCO World Heritage site perched atop a hill in Kathmandu, is fondly known as the Monkey Temple—not just for its spiritual significance but for the lively troops of monkeys that call this sacred place home. These playful creatures have long been a symbol of the temple’s vibrant ecosystem, scampering across its ancient stupa, prayer wheels, and forested paths. However, as of May 18, 2025, growing concerns about the monkeys’ health have sparked a call to action. Many of these monkeys suffer from illnesses caused by eating junk food handed to them by visitors, a practice that disrupts their natural diet of soft pine seeds and other essentials. In partnership with Lily Leaves, LP Homemade Dog Food is stepping up to raise awareness and promote a healthier future for these temple residents. Let’s explore the challenges, prevention strategies, and cures to ensure their well-being, reflecting the same Swadesi Love we show our pets.
